Demi au pair: Langton family testimonial

The Langton family from Auckland hosted 19-year-old au pair Simona, from Germany, through The Campbell Institute’s Demi Au Pair programme.

For working mum Rachel Langton, life was already busy when she found out she was expecting a third child.

“We were constantly needing an extra pair of hands,” she said.

The family opted to host 19-year-old au pair Simona, from Germany, through The Campbell Institute’s Demi Au Pair programme. The programme sees au pairs live with a family, helping with childcare and housework, and study for up to 20 hours per week, choosing from several English study options.

Simona was with the family when baby Dominic was born. For Rachel, it provided the perfect balance of support for the family while still enabling her to be the primary carer for the children.

As for Simona, she loved the mix of time for herself, studying, and spending time with Fletcher, 5, Florence, 1, and baby Dominic. Studying at the Campbell Institute provided an opportunity to make friends to adventure with on the weekends: in five months she visited Wellington, Rotorua, Hobbiton and more.

“I really enjoyed the time here in New Zealand and would not trade it for anything,” she said.

Having an au pair exceeded the family’s expectations in every way.

“Simona’s enthusiasm, her love for our children, her energy and desire to learn has blessed us beyond words,” Rachel said.

“Our house is tidier, our life is not as chaotic, and I’m sure our children are happier than ever before. There is nothing better than coming home from work to hear our children screaming with delight in our backyard with her. She has been an absolute life saver.”
