Meet Philippine – demi au pair

Philippine, from France, was so happy as a demi au pair in New Zealand she extended her stay for an extra six months. Her host family wanted her to stay even longer.

What has been the highlight of your time in New Zealand?

It’s hard to say. I enjoyed every moment of my course, my experience as an au-pair and travelling in NZ, but the amazing opportunity to immerse myself with other cultures from around the world through the school is one of the things I didn’t expect.

What made you decide to stay longer?

I didn’t want to have any regrets. NZ is quite far away from France and it’s not easy to extend your visa or settle down, so I used this opportunity to try to live in this country, improve my English, learn and see more of NZ.

How has The Campbell Institute helped you?

The course gave me the confidence to speak English.  My English improved a lot, I know that and I have no doubt. Even if I am a bit of a perfectionist, I can easily have a discussion with everybody on every subject.

What was your favourite part of the course?

The relationship with teachers is closer than I’m used to. They are patient, attentive and helpful. They create an appropriate atmosphere where we want to try our best.

What do you enjoy about being an au pair?

Being an au pair has been one of my best decisions. For me, it’s the best way to discover a country, its culture and improve your English. Of course, it isn’t easy every day. You are living far away from what you’re used to, but your host family can keep you busy and support you when it is difficult for you.

Philippine was on The Campbell Institute’s Demi Au Pair programme: 12 weeks General English and 24 weeks working and staying with a host family.
